Should Apple help the FBI? Or should they just let the FBI hack the phone on their own? I think they should let the FBI do it on their own. Apple should not help the FBI hack phones for investigations. The FBI was violating our rights and Apple’s too. “Basic American rights were at stake, and the purpose of law is to protect people’s rights. The U.S. government has no right to force anybody to provide it services against their will. It doesn't matter whether the software the FBI wanted Apple to create would create problems for phone owners. Forcing Apple to create such software would have violated the rights of the company.”(Randall G. Holcombe). The company clearly did not want to help the FBI, and the FBI had no right to try to force them to. Our rights are supposed to be protected by the government, not taken away. That’s what the FBI was doing while trying to force Apple against their will to help them with an investigation. They tried getting the information from Apple that they never really had. Creating a software like that could cause a lot of problems because it could provoke pedophiles and criminals to hack our phones. They could use the same technology Whitt Flora thinks Cook was doing wrong by refusing to unlock Farook’s phone. “Cook refused to unlock Farook's phone to help the FBI's investigation of the attack. This refusal is hard to justify in an age when America and its allies are coming under attack from extremist groups.” (Whitt Flora). Cook refused because it was violating his rights, and taking him to court to force him to create a software is violating them even more. He also wanted to save the brand name. The FBI was trying to get Cook to give them information that Apple didn’t have. Even though Tim Cook refused the FBI was still able to hack the phone without Apple’s assistance, so they never needed to contact him in the first place. The FBI is taking away our rights, and potentially provoking others to hack our phones. “Apple phones have features that protect the privacy of the information on them, and the Fourth Amendment guarantees people this right to privacy. And Apple has the right to provide products that help Americans protect this right. Yes, the Fourth Amendment also says the government has a right to search personal property if it has a warrant and probable cause. But it does not say that third parties, like a technology company, can be forced to aid the government in its searches.”(Randall G. Holcombe). If Apple has the right to provide products to protect their right to have privacy then why did the FBI try forcing them against their will to violate that right? Apple creating that software could violate a lot of people’s rights. The government could hack any phone they wanted. It could also provoke others to hack our phones too. If the FBI was successful in forcing Apple to make that software other countries could too, once again violating American rights. Is this really what we want the government to do? Do we really want them to know information that could let them watch our every move? And what if terrorists get a hold of this information? They could find top secret American documents and put the US in danger. Apple should not help the FBI hack phones for investigations. The FBI is violating our rights by trying to force Apple against their will to help them hack a phone. Other people could get the idea to hack our phones, and that could put the US in danger.
