There are many reasons why Andre Cailloux deserves a monument. Andre was also born into slavery but eventually bought his way out of it, he also became a Union captain after getting out of slavery. “Andre Cailloux was born into slavery, bought his way out of bondage and became a Union captain during the war.” He deserves a monument because it takes bravery and selflessness to go into a war and Andre Cailloux shows he has exactly that. He also fought to end slavery and to put the south back in with the Union so the nation would be whole again. “On May 27th, 1863, Cailloux was asked to lead his men into what’s been described as “an almost suicidal assault.” It also takes a lot of bravery to accept and go into an extremely dangerous situation. Andre Cailloux has shown time after time that he has the bravery to go into battle. He’s fighting for what’s right. “After nearly losing his arm in the battle, Cailloux continued to fight”. He deserves a monument for this reason because he continued to fight even after he was greatly injured. He wanted to fight for what is right and I believe that it takes bravery, determination, and selflessness to be considered a hero and Andre Cailloux has all of those traits. He was determined to win as he showed in the fight where he nearly lost his arm. Andre Cailloux shows bravery because he actually goes into war and he goes into an almost suicidal assault. He shows selflessness by actually going to war to fight for the country, he also shows determination to fight for his freedom as a black man. He should get a monument for being brave and fighting for the nation to become whole again.
